It started as a shimmer on the horizon and at first, everyone thought it was just another mirage. Better to expect the disappointment than to rush towards a false promise. Keeping a steady pace meant they could endure, but a sprint could easily deplete them.

Over days the shimmer not only stayed, but grew. It became wider, darker and more alive. It was the edge — the end of the desert. They started smelling the water, the vines, the aliveness. They had almost made it through but hope is deceiving. It could make one rush.

It could kill you.

The end is near but you cannot will it closer than it is. They kept a steady pace. They quieted their hearts. It may still take weeks. It may be farther away than it seemed. The important thing was not to let the hope kill you.
